What is a web host?
A web host is a service provider that places your web site
on a computer which is connected to the internet. The term for this ‘computer’
is called a server.
A web hosting provider will typically have a fast connection to the Internet
and they may host thousands of web sites on many servers. The web host
essentially rents out space to you so that you can get your website up
on the world wide web.
With a well-managed web host, you can free yourself from worrying the
up-keep of complicated server technology and proper technical maintenance.
That’s the whole purpose of the web hosting companies. You should
leave the technical work to web hosting professional while you focus on
your own internet business.
What is uptime?
Uptime is the percentage of time that a web site is working. For example,
if a website is down 2 hours for a particular month, the uptime of the
website for that month would be 718/720 = 99.722%.
What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the amount of data transmitted or received through a unit
of time. In web hosting, bandwidth is consumed when visitors make requests
for files on your web site and download them to their personal computers.
You can estimate your needs by looking at your average page size (including
graphics!) and multiplying it by the number of page views you expect to
have in a month. For example with an average page size of 50 KB, and around
2000 page views per day, you will transfer an average of 3 GB per month.
You should get a plan with 4 to 5 GB of data transfer limit per month,
so you don't have to worry about overstepping your account's limit, which
may cause extra per GB transfer charges.
In other words, if your web page is 20 KB in total file size, you would
be able to receive 2.5 million(!) hits per month at 5GB
What is diskspace?
Disk space refers to the amount of server disk storage your account is
allocated. In order to have your web files served to the world, you need
to have a generous amount of disk space on servers where you can upload
your pages, images, sound clips, etc. and store them.
A vast majority of sites that don't have tons of graphics, sound and
video clips or downloadable files easily fit in 50 MB of disk space. You
should always leave yourself some room for growth or check if the host
has a bigger plan in case you need to upgrade.
What is a control panel?
The Control Panel is an on-line interface, that allows users to change
and update their Web sites. Control panel offers you the ability to administer
your own account. All the features of your web hosting account can be
found in the control panel. With this tool, you will not only gain control,
but also the flexibility to make changes easily.
What is POP3?
Post Office Protocol 3. A protocol that provides a simple, standardized
way for users to access mailboxes and download messages to their computers.
The number of POP3 email accounts you need depend on how you want to
manage your website. As a rule of thumbs, you need at least three email
accounts. One for administration use, one for subscription use and one
for your personal use.
What is email forwarding?
An email service in which your email is automatically sent (forwarded)
from one or more email address, to another (possibly several) specified
email address. If you set up forwarding, any mail sent to your POP account
will automatically be forwarded to your Email box on your ISP or office
network - or wherever you specify it to go.
What is email autoresponder?
An autoresponder is an program that will automatically respond to an
email message sent to a predefined address in your domain. Typically,
this feature is used by people when they are away, notifying the sender
of an e-mail that the recipient is away and will be back on a specified
date. Alternatively, it can be used as a business tool to send specific
responses with information, such as pricing information if a customer
sends an e-mail to a specific address, i.e. enquiries@yourdomain.com.
What is webmail?
Interface that uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to enable
access to email through a web browser. WebMail feature allows you to check
email from any web browser. This will allow you to check your email from
anywhere as long as you have access to an Internet and web browser.
What is web stats?
Web statistics allow you to view where your customers are coming from
on the globe, how many times they visit, what search terms they use to
find your site and what they're looking at the most. Webalizer is one
of the most commonly used software in keeping you informed of the accessibility
and popularity of your web site.
How do I upload my site online?
Uploading your site can be done in many ways, but the most popular is
FTP.
When your hosting account was created, you should have been provided
with an FTP account. Using software such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP, you can
log into your host. Then, using the program like a normal windows program,
you can drag and drop files onto your web host. These files become live
online instantaneously.
There are other ways to upload your site such as using SSH or uploading
files through your browser
What are Jsp’s/Servlets?
Java Server Pages (JSP) is a scripting language that's a hybrid of Java
and HTML. Much like ASP and PHP, it allows web designers to embed scripting
code in their HTML pages.
Servlets are programs written in Java that run in conjunction with a
Servlet Runner. Unlike previous attempts to provide the same sort of functionality
such as NSAPI, ISAPI, etc. Java Servlets run on most web servers with
little or no modification.
